Feist wows with Leonard Cohen tribute

Arts Coverage, JUNO Awards

Feist brought the 2017 Juno Awards to a standstill with her tribute to late songwriter Leonard Cohen.

Strumming an acoustic guitar, the singer-songwriter performed a haunting cover of Cohen’s “Hey, That’s No Way to Say Goodbye” during the Junos broadcast on April 2.

In a press conference on April 1, Leonard Cohen’s son Adam, who was on-hand to accept Artist of the Year on his father’s behalf, called Feist “annoyingly good.” He later deemed her tribute “beautiful, touching, and understated.”

Cohen also revealed that he’d unsuccessfully attempted to recruit Feist to provide vocals on his father’s final album, You Want It Darker.

“Feist is pure,” said Junos executive producer John Brunton about the tribute.

“She’s just such a class act, and she’s got such a really soulful, honest delivery and vibe,” Brunton continued. “We just thought that she would be a good person to represent all the same kind of integrity that Leonard represented his entire career.”

You Want it Darker was awarded Album of the Year during the April 2 Juno Awards broadcast.

Speaking to media during the Junos Gala Dinner and Awards on April 1, Adam Cohen summed up his father’s perspective on creating his final album:

“I’m a captive. I have no other purpose or mission.”
